Regret is often interpreted not only as a lack of maternal love but also as a harmful behavior—indifference, neglect, hostility, or even a type of violence—toward one’s children:

Susie (mother of two children between 15 and 19):

I received parental guidance from our social worker and my children’s teacher, so we spoke about the fact that … I told them, they have already heard my opinion, and every time they are shocked. They say, “If we didn’t know you, we would take your children away. We would say that they were unfortunate. If we didn’t know you.” […] It’s irritating. So I said, “On the contrary, exactly because I am saying [that I regret motherhood], it shows I am aware of how complex the situation is. I am not neglecting my daughters.”
